The Lava Falls Adventure tour
3 hours · From Iceland

Walk inside Raufarhólshellir on the Standard Lava Tunnel Tour: an hour-long guided walk through a 5,200-year-old lava tube, just 30 minutes from Reykjavík.
About 5,200 years ago, a river of lava drained out from under its own hardened crust and left a tunnel behind. You can now walk into it with a helmet on your head, a guide in front, and the colours of the rock lit up around you.
Raufarhólshellir, sold simply as The Lava Tunnel, is one of the longest and best-known lava tubes in Iceland, about 30 minutes' drive from Reykjavík and open all year. The floor of the tunnel is a jumble of large rocks, so the operator has built paths and a footbridge through the section you visit. That makes it a genuine cave walk without the scrambling.
The guided walk lasts 50 to 60 minutes. Your guide leads you along the paths, and lighting in this part of the tunnel shows off the changing colours of the rock and the marks of the volcanic forces that formed it. Tours leave every hour on the hour, with the first at 09:00 and the last at 17:00.
Most people can do it. The operator does not recommend it for anyone who has trouble with balance, walking on uneven ground such as snow, or going up and down steep stairs. Think carefully about that last one if your knees have opinions.
Bring warm clothes and sturdy shoes. The tunnel is a natural cave, not a heated visitor centre.
Pro tip: Since tours go every hour, this fits easily into a day on the Reykjanes Peninsula or the start of a South Coast drive. Book the slot that matches your route rather than rushing to make the first one.
