Glacier Ice Climbing
4 hours · From Skaftafell

Crevasse Labyrinth glacier walk in Skaftafell: a guided ~4 km route between blue ice walls on Fallsjökull, beginner and family friendly, gear included.
Picture a corridor of blue ice with walls taller than you, a strip of sky overhead and crampons crunching underfoot. That's the Crevasse Labyrinth: a natural maze through the ice of Fallsjökull, one of the outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull, Iceland's biggest ice cap.
Arctic Adventures pitches it as the feel of an ice cave with the accessibility of a glacier hike, and unlike most ice caves it runs year-round. No technical experience is needed.
You meet your guide at the Arctic Adventures booking hut in Skaftafell, then drive about 11 km to the Fallsjökull glacier tongue. After gearing up, you set off on a walk of roughly 4 km through the crevasse track, a route the guides have scouted through the ice. It's a good one for photographers, with ice walls and blue light at almost every turn.
Not included: warm outdoor clothing, gloves and hat, hiking boots, parking fees, and food and drinks. Waterproof jackets, trousers and boots can be rented for a fee.
It's rated easy and suits beginners and families, but it isn't a stroll. Plan for about 4 km of walking on uneven glacier terrain with 200 to 250 metres of elevation gain. The crampons only fit shoe size 35 EU and up, so anyone with smaller feet can't join, which rules out some younger children.
Dress in layers: a thin base layer (wool if you have it), a fleece or heavy wool mid layer, and a waterproof, windproof shell. Skip the jeans in favour of synthetic or quick-dry trousers. Boots need proper ankle support; trainers and low-cut shoes don't work with crampons.
Pro tip: Bring sunglasses and sunscreen even on a grey day. The ice reflects a surprising amount of light, and a small backpack with water and a snack is worth having.
