Ice Cave Tour

Vatnajökull ice cave tour from Jökulsárlón: a 4x4 ride and guided glacier walk to natural blue ice caves on Breiðamerkurjökull, glacier gear included.

Full description

Natural ice caves are temporary by design. They form in the glacier over the season, change week by week, and melt away. Which is exactly why seeing one with people who check the ice every single day matters.

Local Guide of Vatnajökull describes itself as the original ice cave operator, and this is its most popular winter tour. The caves are on the west side of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest ice cap.

What you'll do on the Vatnajökull ice cave tour

From the operator's base at Jökulsárlón, a 4x4 takes you to the glacier. From there, a trained glacier guide leads a walk to the ice. Depending on weather and conditions, you may visit one to three naturally formed blue ice features. The guide picks the safest and most scenic route for the day, and walking distances vary.

The tour takes around four hours, occasionally three and a half, depending on conditions and group pace. Because the caves are natural, the location, route or setup can change at short notice due to weather, ice movement or the guide's call. Ice caves are popular, so expect to share them with other groups.

What's included

  • Local ice cave guide
  • All the safety glacier gear needed, such as microspikes or crampons
  • 4x4 ride from the base to the glacier

Good to know before you go

The meeting point is the main car park at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, next to the cafeteria and near Diamond Beach, about 370 km east of Reykjavík on Route 1. The operator's marked vehicle waits in the bus parking area. In winter, allow for the weather and arrive 20 to 25 minutes before departure.

Good boots or hiking shoes are essential, as the ground can be muddy and you may need crampons; boots can be rented on location for a fee. Wear warm, waterproof clothing, as winter here can be cold, wet and windy.

Pro tip: No refreshments are included, so bring water and a snack. If you're driving from Reykjavík, it's a long way, so stay nearby the night before rather than racing the clock.
